Cheese Rolling and Comments from a Stranger

It's been a while, so I thought I'd just write a few lines about what's been going on here, which hasn't been much as I'm now working on my dissertation which means means that I've mostly been procrastinating. Yee haw.

Ok, so back on May 28th, a bank holiday here (Whit Monday), we went to the most bizarre event I've ever heard of or seen: the cheese-rolling festival in Gloucestershire. I'd been wanting to go to this since I first heard about it back in Beijing years ago. You know there's a lot to do in a country where people actually gather (rain or shine, and in England, that's usually rain) to watch people chase chunks of cheese rolling down a hill. This is an English tradition (it's taken place for hundreds of years), but funnily enough, not many of my English friends have actually attended the event themselves. Hmmm.

Rich and I woke up early and drove down to Cooper's Hill in Brockworth in the rain. When we arrived, we looked up at the hill and realized for the first time that if we wanted to watch the compehttp://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.giftition, we would have to hike up the hill (duh!). So we hiked up (let me tell you, pictures don't do justice to the steepness of the hill), found our spot, and stood there for about three hours, laughed at the ridiculousness of it all, took our pictures (which I still haven't added to my computer) and then left with sore calves from standing at an incline for such a long time. I loved the fact that the first thing we saw at the base of the hill was a group of ambulances waiting to take injured competitors away! Gotta love that.

I'll add my pics later, but for now, you can check out this link to see what actually happens: http://www.cheese-rolling.co.uk
Check out this video from youtube to see more: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZC5ykhXDDbo. It's rather entertaining...

On to more exciting news (I know you're thinking, can anything actually be more exciting than the cheese rolling festival?)... Rich and I were walking home from the city centre last night when a stranger stopped us and said, "Excuse me, but I have to say that you two look like a very good couple". That was it. He didn't want us to buy anything and he was far enough away that he couldn't have possibly tried to steal anything from us either. Isn't that nice?

OK, back to my dissertation :(
